Time isn’t standing still for Assumption College. As this Worcester based college continues to grow it announced this week that it has named a new provost and vice-president of academic affairs. The college recently announced that Dr. Francis Lazarus of the University of Dallas will start work at the position starting June 15th.
He has already shown success at this position at 3 other educational institutions the latest of which was the University of Dallas. His previous experience at the post was at the University of San Diego and Marquette University. All 3 are catholic institutions with the University of Dallas having somewhat a smaller level of enrollment at the undergraduate level than Assumption. Marquette and San Diego were much bigger student populations. It is hoped that this experience will help to elevate Assumption’s standing outside the region even more in the years to come.
Assumption College is one of 2 Catholic based colleges in Worcester, the other being Holy Cross. Both colleges have expansive picturesque campuses with impressive facilities. I made a recent trip out to Assumption and was quite impressed with the new Multi-Sport Stadium that was opened in 2005 for their greyhounds. It appears even the Worcester Tornadoes are using it as a practice facility based on a recent story in the Telegram. College sports is a big part of the college experience. It also brings in interest from the community.
Assumption is located on the West Side of Worcester which definitely has a different feel than the rest of Worcester. A beautiful suburban feel is the best way I can describe the drive up on Salisbury Street to the Holden line. We recently reported that Assumption also was recognized for involvement in the surrounding community. It made the Honor Roll list on President Obama’s 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
