Irish President Honoring Worcester on Memorial Day
Irish president Mary McAleese is honoring Worcester on Memorial Day by laying a wreath at the Celtic Cross at Worcester City Hall. This is a great gesture since she is stopping here before continueing to Boston.
According to the Worcester City Hall website, she will be meeting with Mayor Lukes and the local Irish Community at the Hibernian Cultural Center.
The Barre Granite Celtic Cross is a memorial to the early Irish settlers in Worcester and their descendants. It was erected in 1978 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the permanent settlement of Irish in Worcester.
The laying of the wreath is scheduled at 3:30pm on Monday. If you make it into the common be sure to visit the Korean War Memorial if you haven’t had a chance to. It is a short walk away and puts Memorial Day in perspective.
As we enjoy this extra day off let’s not forget the sacrifice that the brave men and women of the military have made…
