battery powered carThe Boston Business Journal and the Associated Press are reporting that Boston Power based out of Westborough plans to build a battery manufacturing facility in Auburn, Massachusetts.  This is great news for the Central Massachusetts economy and highlights a possible success story of the stimulus programs coming out of the Obama administration.

Boston Power manufactures lithium-ion battery technology platform based products, the Sonata® and the Swing cells.  The first is used mainly for notebooks and the second for electric vehicles and industrial equipment.  The company was founded in 2005 by Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud.  The company has manufacturing plants in Asia so it is great that the decision was made to build this plant in Auburn.

No only is Boston Power pursueing stimulus money  it is working with the Patrick adinistraton which is pledging up to $9 million in matching fund according to InformationWeek.  This is a good start in making Massachusetts a center for manufacturing and other green industry jobs.  The proposed plant would employ 600 people.
