WOOphoria – Culture and Revitalization in Worcester

woosmWOOphoria is coming to Worcester this Sunday, September 20th. No it isn’t a play, it’s a celebration put on by the Worcester Cultural Coalition in honor of 10 years of “creative city-making”. The Worcester Cultural Coalition is:

the unified voice of Worcester’s cultural community whose members are the leaders of the City’s sixty-plus arts and cultural institutions and organizations.

WOOphoria is basically the 10 year anniversary of this coalition.  WOOphoria consists of a variety of activities and tours featuring many of the coalition’s members.  It is being done in conjunction with the popular stART on the Street Festival. This free festival also honors the arts in Worcester.

Besided the obvious entertainment value of the event the Worcester Cultural Coalition will be announcing an interactive public art project in honor of Sigmund Freud’s visit to Worcester 100 years ago.  The project will be called “The Couch” .  The Couch will be moved around to different locations around the city where visitors can write down

complaints, concerns, hopes and dreams on slips of paper and to deposit them in a box provided as part of The Couch display.  These slips will subsequently be given to other artists and performers to create original music, poetry and creative city expressions that will help us let go of our negativity and look to a forward thinking creative identity.

Now that is definitely a creative way to get out people’s thoughts about themselves and Worcester in a positive way.

The other announcement that is taking place is that the WOO card that is currently available to college students free for discounts to events and activities in the Worcester County area will be made available to the public for a $20 fee.  This a great way to save money as you explore the great art and culture that Worcester and Central Massachusetts has to offer.
