Tree Lightings A Holiday Favorite

The annual Worcester Festival of Lights takes place this evening at Worcester Common.  No the picture isn’t one from Worcester Common, I hope to get one this year.  The picture does show a tree lighting event that has been a tradition throughout the United States as a symbol of the Holiday Season.

The Worcester Tree Lighting has also taken place regularly and features not just the lighting of the tree but other events as well.  Historically the Festival of Lights has included:

*Youth Chorus Performances
*Horse Drawn Hayrides
*Artists and Performers

This year the City of Worcester website seems to only be mentioning Caroling with musical selections being sung by the cast of A Christmas Carol which will be playing at the Hanover Theatre.

Worcester City Hall is an older beautiful looking building and when it is lighted up with the sounds of music and caroling in the backdrop is pretty neat.  Though I don’t have a picture I was able to find a video of the Worcester Festival of Lights from 2008.  It shows City Hall lighted up with the clock lighted as well.  Sadly based on a conversation I had with someone at Worcester City Hall the Ice Skating Rink won’t be open this year.  When that is added to the event it will make it an even more Christmassy(Is that a word?.

Festivities start at 5pm tonight December 3, 2010.  Enjoy!
