Today the Patrick administration announced that they would be using discretionary funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to rehire laid off firefighters across the commonwealth.  This is welcome news for Worcester who according to the Telegram will be able to use the funds for 16 firefighters.

Congressman James McGovern is quoted in the press release:

“I’m very pleased that Fall River, North Attleboro and Worcester will be receiving this important stimulus funding,” said Congressman James McGovern. “Local budgets have been hit hard during the economic downturn, and it’s critical that we support public safety. I want to thank the Governor for his dedication to this issue.”

Stimulus funds are proving to be critical for Massachusetts and Worcester specifically.  Most recently Worcester and Central Mass benefitted from stimulus funds to receive $4.5 to plant trees because of the devastation of the Asian Long Horned Beetle.  Though Worcester was not a recipient of grant funds awarded by the Department of Justice towards its police department.  In these econonomic times any help is appreciated and we will all feel safer with the Worcester firefighters being rehired.
